Stolen Golf Cart At Put-in-Bay Nets Man Prison Term
Put-in-Bay, Ohio — A 33-year-old man from Sandusky was drunk when he crashed his stolen golf cart at Put-in-Bay. As a result of the crash, his passenger was severely injured. Michael T. McCombs was charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, a felony of the 4th degree, aggravated vehicular assault, a felony 2nd degree, and vehicular assault, a felony of the 2nd degree. McCombs was intoxicated at the time and driving with a suspended license on July 22nd when he crashed the Put-in-Bay Golf Cart into a utility pole.
According to the indictment, his Collins, Ohio, passenger was seriously injured. McCombs was released on bond after his arrest. Subsequently, McCombs violated the terms and conditions of his bond by failing to make his daily report, attend sober meetings, and report his prescription medications. The bond was set at $150,000. McCombs appeared in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court before Judge Bruce Winters recently and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of vehicular assault and grand theft of a motor vehicle. The remaining charge of aggravated vehicular assault was dismissed. Both charges are fourth-degree felonies.
McCombs was sentenced to a period of not less than 15 months to be served in the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $7481.33 and court costs in the amount of $1119.73 Golf Carts are licensed and registered motor vehicles at Put-in-Bay, Ohio and are treated the same as automobiles.
