Senior Center News October 2019 What’s Happening At Put-in-Bay Ohio!
Fall has finally arrived with its vibrant colors, crisp days & nippy nights! This is the time of the year we start digging out the boots, sweaters, scarves, coats, and everything else we need to keep the coming chill away. The cold, wet weather & dark mornings make it tempting to stay at home rather than get up & come to exercise class. We remain swamped here at the Senior Center, and participation in our activities is strong.
Some islanders who worked during the summer are now rejoining our ranks. Of course, we are sadly saying goodbye to some of our summer comrades. We encourage all seniors to join in any of our programs. Bring a friend, invite your neighbor, or whatever it takes. We are a group of some of the most active seniors in the county.
Let’s keep it up! We had several special events in September, including the “Empty Bowls Benefit” bowl painting evening. We had a great turnout & many island residents joined in to paint their bowls. If you’d like to see your fired & finished “Empty Bowl,” they will be on display at the Senior Center sometime in October. We’ll let you know the date as soon as we know!
Senior Center News October 2019 Important Changes in Medicare
We learned about upcoming “Changes in Medicare” through a program by American Senior Associates’ Ed Clunk & also discussed “End of Life” issues
through Jennifer Waldron from Walker Funeral Home. We also had a unique program by Gretchen Franklin from Stein Hospice on “Improving Our Memory.” We ended September with our annual picnic while we watched the Put-in-Bay Road Races at the airport. A huge shout-out goes to Barb & Doug Mehling for opening their beautiful property to the Seniors for the picnic & to watch the races.
October brings more fun activities: Our annual Fall Cider Press Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share & a container if you’d like to take some cider home. Anyone that has an apple tree in their yard and would like to donate apples, please drop them off at the Sr. Center. We are also planning our first trip to the Toledo Zoo on Tuesday, Oct. 15th. Finally, on Oct. 31st, the Senior Center will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for all the Island “Trick-or-Treaters” … Seniors bring the Treats & Parents bring the Kids! Costumes are encouraged for all!
Please remember to check the Senior Center bulletin board and calendars posted at the Senior Center, General Store, Post Office, Twp. Office, Library & our website: www.PIBseniorcenter.org for any last-minute events and Senior Center News October 2019 that are not planned far enough to get them on the calendar for this publication! Please be aware that our website has not been updated recently, and we are working hard to resolve the software issues preventing us from updating the website.
Our Senior Lunches continue every Thursday at the Reel Bar @ noon. Please make your reservation by noon on Wednesday by signing up at the Senior Center or calling the center at (419) 285-5501. A very special “Thank-You” goes out to the staff at the Reel Bar for keeping the senior lunches running smoothly! The awesome people at the EMS continue to take Blood Pressure every Monday at 10:00 a.m. during the Coffee Social Hour. Feel free to come to get yours checked, as this is an excellent service they provide.
The “60+ Clinic” is a free program for those 60 and older. It’s held at the Senior Center every 4th Thursday of the month. The date for Oct. is Thursday the 24th if you’d like to take advantage of this beautiful program, call 419-734-6800 to make your appointment. (The Flu Vaccine will be available to 60+ Clinic patients in October. Please bring your insurance card if you want the flu vaccine.) We are honored to host the Legion Lunch every 3rd Thursday of the month. We are looking for people willing to volunteer to help serve the lunch, make dessert, and/or clean up afterward. Please help us support our veterans.
I want to give a shout-out to all our seniors for both their participation & suggestions, as well as volunteering to assist in all our activities. Nothing goes unnoticed, and all are truly appreciated. That’s is for Senior Center News October 2019!
