School News May 2014 – by Steve Poe, Superintendent
Our seniors returned from their seven-day Caribbean cruise on April 19th. This was a class trip they will never forget, from the delicious food on the ship to the excursions at various ports of call. This senior class worked hard to raise funds for this trip and returned, claiming it was worth every penny. Good job, seniors!
Dr. Brett Kuns will again offer free medical examinations for our students involved in extra-curricular activities. The date for the physical exams is Thursday, May 15th. A schedule and forms will be sent home before this date for parents to complete. PLEASE SEND IN COMPLETED EXAM FORMS BEFORE MAY 15. It is hard to believe we are preparing for the end of another school year.
In other school news, The Spring Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th, at 7 p.m., and the annual Awards Day is set for Thursday, May 29th. These two programs are two sure signs that we are closing in on another school year. Completing the school year will be Graduation on Friday, June 6th at 7:00 pm at the Perry Monument. This year’s graduation will feature speeches from our class Valedictorian, Zoltan Urge, and our Salutatorian, Madeline Pugh.
In other School News May 2014, Zoltan was recently honored at the annual Ottawa County Top Ten Banquet, where he received the Earl Johnson Scholarship. In addition, senior student Victoria Wertenbach will receive recognition for her academic accomplishments at the annual “Ottawa County 9 to 5 Breakfast” on Friday, May 9th. Jennifer Robison Norris, a 1989 Put-in-Bay graduate, will address this year’s graduating class.
Ms. Norris is Vice-President and Associate General Counsel at Supply Chain Services-Pharmaceutical at Cardinal Health, Inc. in Dublin, Ohio. Negotiating contracts and providing legal counsel to all company areas are two of her many responsibilities. After leaving Put-in-Bay, Jennifer attended Miami University for her undergraduate work before graduating in the Top Ten Percent at the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. Ms. Norris brings a wealth of knowledge to the podium, and our graduates look forward to welcoming her back to the island she once called ‘home.’ Jennifer and her husband, Joel, along with an 11-year-old son, Jack, now live in Upper
Arlington.
May 5th to 9th is Staff Appreciation Week. Our teachers and support staff do a fantastic job, and we want to thank them for their hard work and dedication. We are blessed to have such talented professionals in our school system. The next time you see one of them, maybe say, “Thank you.” On Friday, May 23rd, the school will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. for Memorial Day Weekend. That’s it for Put-in-Bay School News!
