MARK YOUR CALENDAR: 12:30 EARLY RELEASE ON MAY 15 On Wednesday, May 15th, Put-in-Bay School students will be released at 12:30. Teachers will use the afternoon for professional development and planning with administration and county officials. With the numerous changes coming in areas of curriculum, evaluation, assessments, etc., to our Put-in-Bay School., preparation for the 2013-14 school year has begun.
REMINDER: COMPLETE PHYSICAL EXAM FORMS-For our Put-in-Bay School students involved in extra-curricular activities, Dr. Brett Kuns will again offer free medical examinations. The date for physical exams is Thursday, May 9th. A schedule and forms will be sent home prior to this date for parents to complete.
SPRING CONCERT-It is hard to believe we are preparing for the end of another school year. The Spring Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th, at 7:00 pm, and the annual Awards Day is set for Thursday, May 30th. These programs are two sure signs
that we are closing in on another Put-in-Bay School year.
GRADUATION-This year’s graduation will feature speeches from our class Valedictorian, Karina Kowalski, and our Salutatorian, Wyatt Auger. Karina was recently honored at the annual Ottawa County Top Ten Banquet, where she received the Earl Johnson Scholarship. Addressing this year’s graduating class will be Mr. Robert Schmidt.
In keeping with our tradition to have a former Put-in-Bay School graduate speak at graduation, Mr. Schmidt brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the podium. After dropping out of school to enter the Navy at the start of World War II, Bob finished his high school coursework later in life and graduated with the Put-in-Bay class of 1970. We look forward to hearing his insight and advice for our graduates.
MISCELLANEOUS School News May 2013
Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Vicki VanNess, has been leading activities with our elementary students during the past month, focusing on diversity and accepting others. Kindergarten students enjoyed an original puppet show written and performed by 6th grader Peyton Gilhart. Grades one and two students read the book, “Elmer,” by Mr. David McKee and learned that it is definitely “OK to be Different!” Students made their patchwork elephants to model Elmer.
The students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 read Dr. Seuss’s book, “The Sneetches.” This book explains that it doesn’t matter if we are “yellow star belly Sneetches or plain belly Sneetches in a humorous way. After trying to imitate the Sneetches while playing games, these Put-in-Bay School students then used their imagination to create “Diversity Creatures.” Poster work has been displayed to remind everyone that every creature is unique and differences make each one of us special.
We say “goodbye” to Mrs. Jean Smith, our speech and language pathologist. Jean has made a significant impact on those students and parents she served and was an inspirational, positive, and valuable member of our Put-in-Bay School staff. We will miss her and wish her the best as she enjoys her retirement. Thanks, Jean!
May 6 to 10 is Staff Appreciation Week. Our teachers and support staff do a fantastic job, and we want to thank them for their hard work and dedication. We are blessed to have such talented professionals in our school system. The next time you see one of them, maybe say, “Thank you.”
On Friday, May 24th, the school will be dismissed at 12:30 for Memorial Day Weekend. Put-in-Bay’s School Student of the Month was 8th grader Sophia Schroeder. The teacher who nominated her wrote: “President John F. Kennedy once said, ‘We choose to do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.’
This quote describes the drive and determination of one of our most unassuming and quietest students. This student is willing to take on challenges and risks to achieve challenging goals. She is willing to work hard to improve in everything from classroom work to sports. Her teammates admire her skill, competitiveness, and mental toughness on the Put-in-Bay archery team. She is a fierce competitor who raises her game when the pressure is at its most intense, and she does it all with grace and dignity, along with a smile on her face.”
