Terry Clevenger from O.E. Meyer, a propane supplier for the island, told us there was enough propane in their tanks to keep customers supplied during the long and bitterly cold winter. He also mentioned that when propane prices skyrocketed in mid-winter, island customers were paying $1.30 less per gallon than people on the mainland were paying. Since the island propane supply was put in the tanks last fall at the regular price and already paid for, the company didn’t have to raise it for its customers here.
It looks like everyone on Concord Ave. is going to have sidewalks before too long. The Village extended its sidewalk replacement program, where it pays half the cost. Now, getting people to walk on the new sidewalks and not in the street would be nice.
A Put-in-Bay News Stories article this past month about a 5-foot, 8-inch rare Lake Sturgeon being caught and released off Mouse Island. Put-in-Bay School students will have a new science teacher this fall who will replace Paul Genzman, who is leaving the island after about fifteen years. She’s Missi Kay Kowalski, right here from Put-in-Bay! Congrats, Missi!
If you like ukuleles, ask Tim Pompei to invite you to like the Put-in-Bay Ukulele Association on Facebook. These Put-in-Bay News Stories come to us from the Sandusky Register. Renovations at the Commons of Providence, a senior care center in Sandusky, were recently completed in the facility’s memory care unit. The unit is tailored to treating people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other related conditions. Among things, patients can do is to venture to the Put-in-Bay Pub, where they can start a puzzle or organize a poker game with friends while they guzzle an adult beverage.
We found this query on the Internet. How much should I expect to pay for a beer in Put-in-Bay? One of the answers was, “A lot!” The Put-in-Bay Vol. Fire Dept. is looking into an alert system that would let their volunteers use their cell phones to alert them when there is a call. They still use pagers but want more coverage.
The new bar on the Main Deck at the Boardwalk is really coming along nicely and may even be done by the time we go to press. Patrons can look right out over the busy public docks as they sit and enjoy a beverage, a delicious meal, or a bowl of Lobster Bisque. It’s been a hectic month at the Put-in-Bay Resort Swim-Up Bar!
If you are into yoga, you’ll be glad to know you can take yoga classes almost every day of the week here on the island in the season. We just happened to be at the Depot on the day of the Amazing Raise. Thirty-three teams scoured the island, taking on challenges to raise money for children’s charities. As part of the challenge, they had to eat what looked like a little cupcake Pauline Garsteck and her staff from the Village Bakery put together for them.
Since there’s no challenge in eating a delicious little cupcake, the Bakery was asked to make something that was really hot and challenging to swallow. Needless to say, Pauline will only be serving delicious baked goods to her everyday customers.

News Stories July 2014 From Kellys Island
KELLEYS ISLAND, Ohio — A U.S. Coast Guard crew from Marblehead Station rescued three fishermen from a sinking boat north of Kelleys Island after waves swamped their boat early Wednesday morning, June 18th. One of the boaters was able to call 911 with his cell phone. A conference call was set up to maintain communication between a watchstander, the dispatcher, and the man in the water who had called 911.
All three men were in the water when the rescue boat arrived. They were wearing life jackets and were pulled out of the water onto the guard’s 45-foot-long rescue boat with a heaving line. None of them was injured. The anglers were taken to Kelleys Island State Park. Commercial salvage was contacted, and no pollution report was reported with the incident. The names of the victims were not released. Boaters should take caution when on Lake Erie.
Earlier this spring, two men and two women fishing from a small boat near the islands lost their lives when their boat was swamped and sunk in a similar type of situation. Unfortunately, the lake water was still frigid.
Back to Put-in-Bay News Stories! Put-in-Bay Village Council has a lot on its plate. At its June meetings, members of the Put-in-Bay Village Council discussed several issues. Among them were the behavior of patrons renting a home on Bayview Ave., a sign with a double and suggestive meaning on Loraine Ave., taxis not pulling over to the curb to let passengers exit and/or board, residents who still do not have house numbers, a wastewater lift station in the park, the need to close down and/or open Bayview Ave. where dock construction work is in progress.
The auditor’s report of its review of the Village books, delinquent business licenses, keeping dockmasters busy while the docks are still closed, a raise for the Clerk of Courts, background checks for taxi drivers, an inspection of buildings used to house seasonal employees, the cleaning of the steps leading to the police department’s office in the basement of the Town Hall.
More problems with the noise ordinance, personnel files for village employees, the termination of water service for those businesses with past due water bills, repair bills the Township wants to be paid for the police boat, expenses for the dock project, and the cleaning of the bathing beach at the end of Delaware Ave., among other things.
Bob Gatewood passed out a CD of his song, Friends of the Bay, to each member of the Council. Council also thanked Burns Pierce and Kelly Faris for putting up the flags along the streets in the Village.
