CELEBRATING- Put-in-Bay News reports Griffing Flying Service has reached the milestone of 80 years of service. Harry Thomas Griffing, Sr. and his wife Sue founded Griffing Flying Service in 1937 at the Sandusky Airport in Sandusky, Ohio. Due to customer demand, the company launched primarily as a flight training school but quickly began offering charter flights to Kelleys Island and Pelee Island. In 1945, operations were moved to another airport on the south side of Sandusky. In 1962, an opportunity to purchase the original Sandusky Airport arose.
Harry and Sue jumped at the chance to move operations back to the original airport, which later became the Griffing Sandusky Airport. In 2013, the Griffing Sandusky Airport was sold, and operations were carried to the Erie-Ottawa International Airport in Port Clinton, Ohio, where they currently reside. In 1991, Griffing Flying Service purchased its island competitor, Island Airlines, and expanded service to all Lake Erie Islands, including the United States Mail contract to serve South Bass, Middle Bass, North Bass, and Kelleys Island.
Over the years, the charter fleet expanded and took the shape of many different aircraft until the current fleet of Piper Archers, Piper Saratogas, the Britten-Norman Islander, and the Raytheon King Air B200 aircraft was established in 2007. Griffing Flying Service is proud to have such strong history in the north-central Ohio area, and they look forward to serving Put-in-Bay the Islands for many years to come. Our longevity is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the Griffing Family and their employees, past and present, and to all of our customers for their continued support.
