The Put-in-Bay Diary June 2017 featured the following Milestone events.

Thurs., June 1st – Construction workers are putting siding on an old freight barn at Lime Kiln Dock at the Put-in-Bay Ferry Landing.

Fri., June 2nd – Put-in-Bay High School graduation ceremonies occur at the Monument Visitors Center. A reception at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club follows it. The Old Forge and the Boardwalk provide food. June 3rd – Some Put-in-Bay High Alumni enjoy an impromptu cocktail gathering at Topsy Turvey’s in the evening. It is a warm-up for their banquet on Sunday.

Put-in-Bay Diary- Sun., June 4th – The Put-in-Bay High School Alumni Association holds its first-ever Sunday brunch rather than the traditional day-after-graduation dinner. It was an excellent turnout and plenty of mimosas for the fun event. Founder’s Day in the  Put-in-Bay Ohio DeRivera Park was canceled due to iffy weather.

Put-in-Bay Diary Mon., June 5th – There’s a golf cart fire on Columbus Ave. on East Point. The pieces after the fire could be hauled off in a wheelbarrow.

Put-in-Bay Diary Tues., June 6th – The garlic mustard pulls at the Jane Coates Wildlife Trail in the morning. Garlic mustard is an invasive non-native plant on Put-in-Bay Island. Clearing this plant ensures there will continue to be spectacular wildflower displays there each summer. It must be “Island Street Day!” New asphalt pavement in going down on Victory Ave. and stripes are being painted on State Rte. 357, Put-in-Bay, Ohio’s only state highway. It’s International Night at St. Paul’s. Many student workers on the island this summer from other countries enjoy a meal and welcome gifts.

Put-in-Bay Diary  Wed., June 7th – The Jet Express Ferry is hosting “Will’s Day at the Bay” to raise money for families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy(SMA). Round-trip Jet Express tickets from Port Clinton to Put-in-Bay are available for a minimum donation of $10. The Jet Express donates 100% of proceeds to cure SMA and Will’s Playground at DeRivera Park in Put-in-Bay.

The event is held in memory of the young WillBlumensaadt of Put-in-Bay, who died of SMA just before his first birthday in June 2005. Will’s father and owner of Jet Express, Todd Blumensaadt, said: “This is a really special event for me and the whole Jet Crew. Hopefully, by supporting research on this disease, we can make a difference for children and families suffering from SMA.”

Put-in-Bay Diary  Thurs., June 8th – At the Reel Bar, there’s a “Coffee with the Cops” gathering right after lunch. It’s very informative! Dave and Terri Moore from Ballast Island launch their Lyman for the season. The 22nd Phlocking of the Faithful (Jimmy Buffet fans) kicks in the evening with a party honoring Parrothead legends Pam & Earl from New Orleans’ Tropical Isle! The Garden Club meets and hears about “Creative Container Gardening.”

Put-in-Bay Diary  Fri., June 9th – The ribbon cutting for the Lake Erie Islands Water Trails occurs at South Bass Island State Park. If you like kayaking, the new map with places to see or stop to rest as you paddle from island to island is a real aid

Put-in-Bay Diary  Sat., June 10th – The inaugural Put-in-Bay Music Festival takes place at the  Perry’s Peace Memorial Monument.

Sun., June 11th – As part of the Jimmy Buffet “Phlocking of the Phaithful weekend, there is a songwriter’s brunch at the Reel Bar. The after-party for the antique car parades takes place at the Put-in-Bay Winery at the Doller house. Later in the afternoon, there is a Welcome BackSwim/Sail Orientation at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. Goat owner Scott Jackson celebrates his 50th birthday party with a live big band group, “Swingmania,” playing all the old favorites. Later, Bob Gatewood and Calabash take over the entertainment. It was a great “Island” party!!!!

Mon., June 12th – The Chamber of Commerce meets at Heineman Winery and announces the approval of its new bylaws. A pizza lunch is compliments of Cameo Pizza.

Tues., June 13th – The exterior walls on the first floor at Banyan Bay 2 are up. Attorney General Mike DeWine and his family enjoy time on Gibraltar Island taking a tour and having lunch.

Wed., June 14th – Put-in-Bay Legion members retire scores of flags in a burning ceremony at State Park. A wine and cheese pre-tag sale is showing at the Inselruh estate just east of the Monument.

Thurs., June 15th – The big sale begins at Inselruh. Eighteen Put-in-Bay’s American Legion Post 542 members visit fellow vets at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky where one had just turned 100!

Fri., June 16th – The spaghetti was delicious at the Community Swim/Sail fundraiser dinner at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. No one went away hungry!

Sat., June 17th – The US Brig Niagara is in port for Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial’s Youth Maritime Explorers Camp, in conjunction with Put-in-Bay’s Maritime Celebration. Founder’s Day takes place in DeRivera Park in downtown Put-in-Bay Ohio after being canceled due to weather earlier in June. It’s the last day of the Inselruh estate sale. Everything under $500 is half-price.

Sun., June 18th – The Ohio Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics officially begins at Put-in-Bay. The final leg will be at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

Mon., June 19th – An afternoon thunderstorm blows through the Lake Erie islands area.

Tues., June 20th – Several island youngsters check out an owl at Wild Tuesday at the Nature Center. They also paint fish at the Monument Visitors Center as part of the Arts on Lake Erie program. There are great activities for children all summer long at Put-in-Bay. The fire department volunteers are performing pump operations and drafting exercises at the downtown boat ramp.

Wed., June 21st – At Heineman Winery there’s a group sipping vino and painting those little rocks that they then hide, which hopefully will be found by someone who will post it on the Put-in-Bay Rocks Facebook page.

Thurs., June 22nd – An “After Action Meeting” to discuss the inaugural June 10th Put-in-Bay Music Fest is held in the afternoon at the Monument Visitors Center. The all-important cardboard boat races take place at the Put-in-Bay Village boat ramp. The Hooligan’s team was impressive. Rain dampens the ice cream social at the Dairy Isle. Ray and Laura Fogg celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, and Roger Rhoad from Cameo Pizza celebrates his birthday. Quite honestly, we’ve always thought it odd that Ray and Laura picked Roger’s birthday to get married on.

Fri., June 23rd – There’s a good drenching from the skies above Put-in-Bay in the morning. The rain stops for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly revitalized Lonz Winery. Lots of dignitaries! The Pyrate Fest canons start blasting away in DeRivera Park. Lots of people around in pirate costumes. Pyrate Fest begins, and the cannons are booming, and people dressed in pirate costumes are seen everywhere.

The ODNR holds a Grand Opening of the Historic Lonz Winery Property at the Middle Bass Island State Park. ODNR Director Jim Zehringer was there to celebrate the newly completed renovations of the historic property. As part of the event, there were a ribbon cutting and tours of the cellars. Matt Miller, the manager of the state parks on the Bass Islands, celebrates his birthday at the event. Former parks manager Reggie Langford is with a group of 140 “Wounded Heroes” from Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. These are veterans, police, firefighters, and EMS workers injured in the line of duty. Miller Boat Line provides complimentary passage to the island and golf carts for the group, plus tippers puts on a complimentary buffet for the group.

Sat., June 24th – There’s a snake and nature walk at the Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve in the morning. The Pyrate Fest costume contest winner is a contestant who had participated the last two years in a wheelchair. This year, he walked on stage! Terry Robbins from Detroit is a proud veteran who recovered from his injuries to walk again!

He won the trip to the Cayman Islands sponsored by Cayman Island Tourist Bureau, Cayman Airways, and Sunset House. Jeff Ginther presented his prize from the Caymans Island Tourist Bureau. The PIB Community Sail team is competing in a regatta at North Cape Yacht Club in Michigan. Middle Bass islanders are on their fire department’s fundraiser cruise on one of the Miller ferries. Capt. Bob Stausmire keeps the group in the calmest waters he can find.

Sunday, June 25th – The Perry’s Victory Triathlon & Family Races take place in the morning. The Antique Car group has their post parade at Blu Luna at Harbour Square! The Pyrate Fest cannons are still going off in DeRivera Park, celebrating this very successful end-of-June weekend event. One of the Miller ferries on its way to Put-in-Bay aids in the rescue of several passengers from a boat that was taking on water. Rescue Marine gets all the people out of the water and to safety. Roger and Debbie Reich were driving around the island when a coyote ran across Toledo Ave. in front of them.

Mon., June 26th – Island engineers Pat Chrysler, Berni Meyers, Wes Baker and Bob Hilt install a “Little Free Library (Take Book/Return a Book) box on the lawn between the post office and Island Hardware.

Tues., June 27th – The ladies at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club hold their weekly Auxiliary Luncheon at noon. You can learn all about Dragonflies at the Wild Tuesday program at the Nature Center. There is a “Wine and Canvas” event with local artist Susan Market for an evening of sipping wine and painting.

Wed., June 28th – You can get $2 hot dogs from the grill at the Put-in-Bay yacht club.

Thurs., June 29th – The Put-in-Bay Ohio Garden Club holds its second beach clean-up of the season in the morning. A big thank you goes out to all those who volunteer their help to keep the Bathing Beach clean.

Fri., June 30th – In two months from today, Mella Davies from Shore Villas will be celebrating a special birthday. They’re serving roast pork at the Friday night dinner at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club.
