Put-in-Bay Diary-Feb. 1st – February starts with snow on the ground and open water around the islands.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Feb. 2nd – The Village of Put-in-Bay has a Streets and Safety Committee meeting at the Town Hall in the morning to discuss various issues, one of which is whether or not a non-commissioned chief of police who is not a policeman can hold that position. No action was taken at this meeting.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Feb. 3rd – The Put-in-Bay High School Panther Basketball team plays Cardinal Stritch. Two years ago, islanders were crossing to the mainland over the ice, but not this year.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Feb. 4th – The Put-in-Bay Panthers have their last home basketball game of the season. Patrick Myers of WPIB Radio interviews Lisa Brohl about the Erie Islands Conservancy. It airs between the PIB Panthers basketball games and is on the WPIB. There is ice in the lake around the Lake Erie islands, but not really solid. The Erie Islands Library Chocolate Fest takes place in the morning.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Sun., Feb. 5th – It’s Superbowl Sunday and Put-in-Bay Lodging owner Denny Rectenwald from Harriet’s House celebrates his 70th birthday.
Put-in-Bay Diary -Mon., Feb. 6th – Tip Niese and Dave Frederick are Lifeflighted off Put-in-Bay. This was Tip’s first helicopter ride.
Tues., Feb. 7th – Joe Foutts holds tryouts upstairs in the Town Hall theater for the spring play production of “Is There a Doctor in the House?” This is a hilarious vaudeville-type western farce by Tim Kelly. Performances are scheduled for the 7th, 8th, and 9th of April.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Wed., Feb. 8th – NPR is running a piece about Max and Cecelia, and three other students being picked up at Middle Bass airport to go to school on Put-in-Bay. The kids at St. Paul’s serve pancakes for lunch. Thirty or so kids and adults enjoyed the food and activities.
Thursday, February 9th, Carrie Schneider from Middle Bass is in Key West for the Put-in-Bay Music Festival.
Fri-Feb. 10th – Pat Dailey is at Sloppy Joe’s playing for the Put-in-Bay Music Festival.
Sat-Feb. 11th – The Put-in-Bay Ferry makes two morning trips and two after lunch. Steve Stapleton (Put-in-Bay High School Class of 1985) celebrates his 50th birthday. Sun., Feb. 12th – Steady wind speed at the South Bass Island Lighthouse house at 7 p.m. is 35 miles per hour.
Mon-Feb. 13th – It’s a beautiful, clear-sky morning with no ice in the harbor. The Put-in-Bay Village Council meeting is postponed due to a lack of a quorum.
Tues-Feb. 14th – Donna Pugh and Art Boyles are celebrating birthdays this Valentine’s Day. Art joins the octogenarian club. Lisa Brohl recommends taking your Valentine for a romantic walk at one of the island preserves, going to the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy website, and buying a membership for a gift that keeps giving for years to come. Billy Market reports it was blowing southwest/west up to 25 mph since the night, and the water level is still +32.9” at Marblehead.
He says it could be an “interesting” spring. The Put-in-Bay French Class visited the Senior Center for a little Valentine’s Day fun serving delicious Quiche Lorraine, Tarte de citron, Paumiers, and Petite tarte de pomme to a few seniors. They also enjoyed learning a bit of the French language while playing a game! C’est si Bon! Valentine’s dinner was served at The Forge.
Wed-Feb. 15th – On the TV game show Jeopardy, “IN 1813: “WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE OURS” was the $2000 answer in the category “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” None of the contestants knew the answer.
Thurs-Feb. 16th – The Put-in-Bay American Legion Post 542 met at the Senior Center for their monthly lunch meeting. Mark Mathys from Put-in-Bay Hotels and Resorts reports early season reservations are 5% ahead of the prior year!
Fri-Feb. 17th – At Put-in-Bay School, lots are happening at the 3rd Annual Science Fair and the Pinewood Derby. Blake Booker wins the youth division in the derby. The Jer-Bear And Kurt Ice Fishing Tournament 2017 has its sign-in at Topsy Turvey’s in the evening.
Sat-Feb. 18th – Bud Stonerook on North Bass reports sighting a Canadian fishing boat out by East Sister Island. Kelly and Martha Faris celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary while vacationing in Perdido Key, Florida. Tippers are packed in the evening with those supporting the Jer-Bear & Kurt Scholarship Ice Fishing Tournament.
Sun-Feb. 19th – The Put-in-Bay Vol. Fire Dept. holds a pancake breakfast at the fire station in the morning.
Mon-Feb. 20th – Cleveland Channel 3 is on the island with a reporter and cameraman asking islanders about what it’s like on Put-in-Bay with the ferryboat running this time of year.
Tues-Feb. 21st – The Bible Explorers at St. Paul’s had their boat racing contest after school. The youngsters built their own little boats as they learned about the various Bible stories connected to water, fishing, and boats. The maiden voyage occurs in the 10-foot-long indoor lake created in St. Paul’s undercroft. (Yes, real water). Put-in-Bay Ferry has a late-afternoon trip to the mainland and a “late” trip leaving Catawba at 7:30 p.m.
Wed-Feb. 22nd – Dave Frederick from the West Shore arrives home after being hospitalized after his tree-cutting accident that broke both his legs.
Thurs-Feb. 23rd – It’s another beautiful un-winterlike day at the Bay.
Fri.-Feb. 24th – Put-in-Bay School is dismissed at noon for the beginning of the mid-winter week-long break.
Sat-Feb. 25th- Island music icon Ben Parker of Ben Dover & the Screamers celebrates his 60th birthday. Brad Ohlemacher from the West Shore is at the Home and Garden Show at the Ohio Expo Center promoting the newest condo project at Put-in-Bay, Banyan Cove II.
Sun-Feb. 26th – Ben Dover & the Screamers perform at the Music Box Supper Club in Cleveland, supporting Alzheimer’s Awareness.
Mon-Feb. 27th – Put-in-Bay is quiet as many island families are off-island enjoying the school vacation.
Tues-Feb. 28th – Only 21 more days until spring
