Put-in-Bay Garden Club May 2015 News & Events

Spring, 2015, is finally here, and Garden Club Board members are busy planning various educational programs and an off-island garden tour. There should be something for everyone this year, from shade gardening to herbs to algae and rain gardens. Please check out our website for details on what happens when this summer.

It’s time to renew your Garden Club membership again, and you can do that by mail or online. You can also use the website to find helpful gardening links, to sign up to volunteer, or contact Board members. Kathi Spayde is our webmaster and does a beautiful job of keeping current with club photos and event listings. Joyce Slough joined the Board last year and served as our secretary.

Val Chornyak is in charge of Baskets in the Park, Barb Cooper is our trusty treasurer, and Peggy Leopold and Susan Hildebrandt remain co-presidents. We invite you to offer your suggestions for Club projects or programs by contacting Board members directly or posting them on the website.

The Garden Club Board would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Joan Valachek, who died in March. Joan was an active Garden Club member. She and her husband, Andy, generously spent their time planting, watering baskets, organizing beach cleanups, and supporting all our Garden Club programs, projects, and activities. We will all certainly miss Joan’s warm smile and generous spirit.

Please join us on May 14th at the Hardware Store for our first meeting of the year, when Jason and Chris Cooper will conduct a workshop on planting herbs from seeds. Our monthly meetings will again be held on the second Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Most will be held at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, but check the website to be sure. In September, there will be two Garden Club events.

We will visit Cedar Point on September 10th when landscape supervisor Martha Beverick will give our group a special behind-the-scenes tour of the gardens at Cedar Point. The following week, we will hold our annual meeting and potluck at the Yacht Club.

We know you are busy preparing your beds for planting, dividing perennials, fertilizing, and getting ready to mulch soon. Still, please put May 19th and 20th on your calendars when we will be planting the lamppost baskets in De Rivera Park. We look forward to many helping hands and even promise a gift to those brave volunteers who join us. Come on Tuesday or Wednesday morning or both. Please sign up on the website or let Val Chornyak know you will be coming. Hope to see you there! In the meantime, Happy Gardening!
