Put-in-Bay Diary-Sun., Oct. 1st – The Keys close-down party features delicious free seafood cuisine. Art Boyles and Celestine
Colliers are married in a wedding in the gazebo in DeRivera Park.
Mon., Oct. 2nd – Pauline Garsteck from the Village Bakery treats the HGTV crew here on the island for breakfast. More info to come on this. A Perfect Pairing Bourbon Dinner event at Hooligans features Woodford and Old Forester’s, plus small plate treats creatively prepared by Hooligans kitchen staff.
Tues., Oct. 3rd – Among the birds spotted at the Middle Bass Island East Point Preserve are the Carolina wren, gray-cheeked thrush, and blackpoll warbler. A Village of Put-in-Bay committee has a meeting to discuss an ordinance permitting under-speed vehicles to be driven on village streets.
Put-in-Bay Diary -Wed. Oct 4th – The Reel Bar hosts its 3rd Annual Bourbon Tasting. Five fine bourbons were paired with delicious food courses. Can you say “Amuse Bouche?”
Put-in-Bay Diary Thurs., Oct. 5th – The “Favorite Won” Delivers North Bass Vidal grapes to Put-in-Bay. Vicky Wigle from Kayak the Bay closes up shop for the season and puts the kayaks away. The flower baskets on the lampposts around the downtown park no longer have their flowers after volunteers remove them for the season. There’s a full moon and fireworks for Susan Market’s 50th birthday party.
Put-in-Bay Diary Fri., Oct. 6th – It looks like a resale shop at Don and Rose Stephens, who are having a garage sale.
Sat., Oct. 7th – It’s a busy Saturday with the Wine Festival at the Put-in-Bay Winery at the Doller Estate. There are 200 wines to try, a great silent auction, food treats, and a drawing for the King and Queen of the festival. A “Mad Scientists Halloween Lab” occurs in the afternoon at the Nature Center for kids and adults alike. Ally Urge and Conor Blumensaadt are married at the Anchorage on East Point. The Change of Watch at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club ushers in the new Commodore Gina Trebilcock. The 19th Annual Put-in-Bay Fall Ball and Customer Appreciation Party occur at the Put-in-Bay Resort.
Put-in-Bay Diary -Sun., Oct. 8th – For the Blumensaadt/Urge wedding guests, there’s a brunch at the Crew’s Nest. The Blessing of
the Pets takes place at St. Paul’s Labyrinth.
Mon., Oct. 9th – Village Council hires a new permanent police officer but votes no on a promotion and wage increase on an officer still in his six-month probationary period. The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce meets at Hooligans Irish Pub where chili and a half Reuben are the lunch. The post office is closed, but island kids are in school for Columbus Day.
Tues., Oct. 10th -The weather forecast for Wednesday is for steady 30-mile-per-hour winds. The Stone Lab research boats are moved to the village docks.
Wed., Oct. 11th – Miller Ferry runs most of the day, but when the northeast wind gets terrible, the last two trips of the day are canceled. The Museum holds its fall party for all the volunteers at Heineman Winery.
Thurs., Oct. 12th – Workers are at the tent in the downtown park getting ready for Oktoberfest weekend.
Fri., Oct. 13th – Missi Kowalski’s science class in doing a salamander survey in Cooper’s Woods. The group finds quite a few of these little guys.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Sat., Oct. 14th – 25 kegs of beer emptied at the Oktoberfest in the tent in the village park. Many island restaurants serve a large variety of German food, including brats, wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, potato pancakes, spaetzle, apple dumplings, German Chocolate cake, cabbage rolls, and sauerkraut balls. Great beer and loud German music are the order of the day. The Put-in-Bay volunteer firemen are on the scene trying to assist with a boat that struck Buckeye Reef.
Sun., Oct. 15th – As successful as the Oktoberfest was the day before, the event’s second day is a bust as the weather keeps people away. 49 MPH west winds are reported by Bob Bahney in the evening. The last ferry of the day leaves Put-in-Bay at 4 p.m. The Browns Backers are at Topsy Turvey’s. The Jeff Verhoff scholarship fundraiser dinner occurs at Upper Deck Restaurant in the evening.
Mon., Oct. 16th – The annual Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce Reverse Raffle takes place in the tent left over from the Oktoberfest. Kevin Dailey and the staff at the Boathouse provide a delicious dinner for the large group of partygoers.
Put-in-Bay Diary-Tues., Oct. 17th – Aquamotion, yoga, and duplicate bridge are on the busy Senior Center calendar.
Wed., Oct. 18th – Wed., Oct. 18th – The removal of the mooring balls in the harbor signals it’s almost the end of the boating season. The Put-in-Bay Vol. Fire Dept. practices water rescues with the department airboat.
Thurs., Oct. 19th – The Village Council’s Water & Sewer Committee meets to discuss rate and billing issues. Workers are working on the new landscaping for the entrance to the downtown park at the corner of Bayview and Hartford. Don and Rosi Stephens are celebrating their diamond (60th) wedding anniversary. Mark Mathys and his fishing team are in Cabo San Lucas Competing in the Bisbee’s Tournament.
Fri., Oct. 20th – The water temperature in the lake is about six degrees above average for this time of year. Ken Farber from East Point and Larry Schrader from the West Shore sail to Middle Bass and enjoy pizza at the General Store on this gorgeous day.
Sat., Oct. 21st – The Wake for the end of the season is celebrated at the Round Bar. The island seniors enjoy the Fall Barn Social at Dave Gundlach’s on the West Shore. Ben Dover and the Screamers are playing at the Boathouse.
Sun., Oct. 22nd – On North Bass Island, most inhabitants enjoy a little evening picnic on the lake in front of the old migrant worker housing with a few guests from Put-in-Bay.
Mon., Oct. 23rd – It’s the last day of the season for Fox’s Den residents. Time to pack up and leave the island.
Tues., Oct. 24th – Strong winds out of the southwest see the water level in the lake go down to the lowest it is been in recent months.
Wed., Oct. 25th – In the afternoon, there is a presentation at the Visitors Center at Perry’s Monument discussing proposals for the park in the future. Among the topics are landscaping, parking, traffic flow, Monument access, and more.
Thurs., Oct. 26th – The Put-in-Bay Village Council meets in a special session and hires new legal counsel to replace George Wilber, the longtime attorney for the Village who is now part of the Attorney General’s investigation of the mayor and Village. After school, Bobbi Jo Dobos takes pictures of the island kids in costume for the Halloween Photo Contest.
Fri., Oct. 27th – It’s pumpkin decorating contest time at Pasquale’s. Customers can vote for their favorites among the ten entries.
Sat., Oct. 28th – Tragedy strikes when Danny French dies shortly after leaving work at the Boathouse on his scooter in the wee hours of the morning.
Sun., Oct. 29th – The Browns Backers meet at Mr. Ed’s at 9:30 in the morning to watch the Cleveland/ Minnesota Vikings game played in London, England.
Mon., Oct. 30th – The November Put-in-Bay Gazette is printed in Sandusky.
Tues., Oct. 31st – It’s Trick or Treat night followed by the Halloween Party at Tipper’s and a closedown party at the Goat
