Ottawa County Commissioners to meet at Put-in-Bay
Topping the News June 2018 Put-in-Bay has invited the Ottawa County Commissioners, Mark Stahl, Jim Sass, and President Mark Coppeler to a special meeting on July 9th. Often the commissioners have come to the island individually but rarely make the trip together for a meeting. We are excited that they have accepted our invitation to the meeting to be held on July 9th at 1 pm at the Miller Marina.
This particular meeting at Put-in-Bay will allow chamber members and the public to ask questions about county issues germane to the islands,
The village of Put-in-Bay and Put-in-Bay Township. We know lots of people like to visit our island. Still, business development, infrastructure, governance, mutual aid, transportation, and code enforcement are vital issues that determine the success and enjoyment of our island for businesses and residents. Join us for this particular meeting.

FIREWORKS Make sure you’re on hand Wednesday evening, July 4th, for “Boom Over the Bay,” the big fireworks show the island puts on each year. You’ll find a great spot for viewing anywhere around the shore of the Bay. Fireworks start at 10 p.m.
MIDDLE BASS ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL: The Middle Bass Island Music Festival is an excellent place to sing, dance, and have fun. It will occur on Saturday, July 14th, from noon to 8 p.m. at the old Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island. Take the Miller Ferry to Middle Bass Island from the mainland or the Sonny S from Put-in-Bay for family fun, live music, and more.
Hundreds of athletes from all over the Midwest gather to compete in the annual soccer tournament on Saturday, July 14th, and Sunday, July 15th. You won’t miss them! They’ll be on McCann Field near the Put-in-Bay Resort.
GARDNER GALA
The Gardner Gala at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club will occur on Saturday evening, July 14th. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Gardner Cup, the island’s top award for young island sailors. See the ad and story on page 10 of this issue for more information.
GIBRALTAR ISLAND TOURS
Want to visit Gibraltar Island? Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays from July until August 8, 2018. Tour guides lead a walking tour of the island. Meet at the Boardwalk Restaurant dock at 9:45 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. to attend a time. $10 per person, $5 for children ages 6-12. The water taxi to Gibraltar Island is $6 round-trip, payable to the boat driver.
PUT-IN-BAY GARDEN CLUB HOME & GARDEN TOUR The Put-in-Bay Garden Club will have a Home & Garden Tour of seven
homes on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) on Wednesday, July 25th. See the Garden Club article on pages 38-B14 for details.
WORLD RANGER DAY
World Ranger Day, held on Tuesday, July 31st, at Perry’s Monument, according to News June 2018, is a global observance of Rangers worldwide who died in the line of duty over the past 12 months. Many of these Rangers are from Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. More than half of these deaths are at the hands of poachers and illegal miners, and timber harvesters.
Many more are killed by animals such as elephants, lions, and bears. Rangers will show “The Thin GreenLine” about the Rangers protecting natural resources in their countries and paying the ultimate price. The film will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Visitor Center Theater. Flags from each country affected will be flown on the Park grounds.
FUNDRAISER HOG ROAST AT THE GOAT-
Plan now to attend the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center’s annual fundraiser Pig Roast at the Goat Soup & Whiskey on Wednesday, August 8th, starting at 6 p.m. Along with live entertainment, there will be some excellent victuals from Put-in-Bay’s favorite restaurants and imported Austrian beer from the Goat’s Biergarten. Among the Chinese Bucket Raffle items are a US Brig Niagara Day Sail, a Rattlesnake Island Tour and dinner for two, a charter fishing package, and many other items. Tickets are now available at the Wildlife Center for $15 until August 7th and then $20 at the door on the day of the event.
GOOD NEWS FOR COOPERS WOODS-
The DeRivera Park Trust has its monthly meeting in June at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall. A letter of intent regarding Coopers Woods has been signed between the Conservancy and the DeRivera Park Trust. A grant pre-proposal for 1/2 the purchase price was recently accepted by the Conservation Fund, and a full proposal will need to be sent by July 31.
The Conservancy board will be working hard on this and will keep everyone up to date, and The board hopes that everything continues to move in a positive direction and thanks everyone for their continuing support.
SOUP SUPPER FOR PUT-IN-BAY ISLAND EMPLOYEES-
Suppose you’re an employee or exchange student on the island from the U.S. or anywhere else. In that case, you’re invited to the Cornerstone Room at Mother’s of Sorrows Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 11th, from 6 to 8 p.m. for a free soup supper. Everyone is welcome, so come and enjoy some soup and conversation, plus make some new friends.
TROUBLE IN TAMPA, BUT HAPPY AT PUT-IN-BAY-
Louise Titchener, one of Put-in-Bay seasonal seniors who, along with her husband, John, lives in Shore Villas on East Point, was thrilled when she learned that her historical mystery, Trouble in Tampa, was recently chosen as a semifinalist for the Florida Writer’s Association Royal Palm Award for the best historical mystery of 2018. Louise has written many books over the years. Congrats! Louise.
WEEKLY ARTISAN FAIR-
If you want a tent at the Artisans Fair on Wednesdays in the Village Park, don’t hesitate to contact Christie Ontko. The weekly Artisan Fair at the Village end of De Rivera Park across from the Boathouse takes place on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you’d like to participate, you need to contact her at her shop, Freshwater Retreat, on Airport Rd. Across from the north end of the runway.
CHINCOTEAGUE CALM, REVIEWED BY MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

VILLAGE FISCAL OFFICER LATEST TO LEAVE
The Village of Put-in-Bay has gone through a lot of changes in the last year, some as a result of the Put-in-Bay Investigation. The latest difference is the firing of its Fiscal Officer, Kelly Niese, this past month. The Village Council voted unanimously to let her go. This follows Steve Riddle leaving the Village Administrator position to devote full-time to his police chief duties.
Glenn Basting is the new Village Administrator. Several months ago, longtime Village Solicitor, George Wilber, was replaced with a new attorney, Susan Anderson. Several licensed Put-in-Bay Village Utility Department personnel have left or retired in the last several months. Basting has a water license and found a temporary replacement to help with water and sewer this season.
Golden Gardner Gala July 14th
The Put-in-Bay Community Swim/Sail Program’s biggest event of the season will occur at Put-in-Bay Ohio Yacht Club on Saturday, July 14th. Please plan on joining us at the annual Put-in-Bay CSS fundraiser as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Gardner Trophy with a unique Golden Gardner Gala! The evening will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m.
Dinner stations will open at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., there will be an Awards Program. At 8:30 p.m., the Silent Auction closes, and then at 9 p.m., the Golden Ticket will be drawn for a trip to Napa Valley. TRI-MOTOR RIDES AT Put-in-Bay
