Put-in-Bay Diary June 2018

Fri., June 1st – The Put-in-Bay High School Class of 2018 graduates on the plaza at Perry’s Monument. After the hour-long ceremony, the graduates, their families, and friends head to the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club for a graduation party. The first day of a long schedule of Put-in-Bay June Events! 

Sat., June 2nd – In the afternoon, the Wine in the Garden event takes place at the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center on Meechen Rd. The fundraiser featured local wines and appetizers; you could buy raffle tickets for unique gift baskets. You could also enjoy the Native Gardens and the new back porch while supporting a good cause!

Also, in the afternoon, a few Put-in-Bay High School alumni met at Heineman’s Winery for a little pre-Alumni Banquet warm-up. It seems like only yesterday that Jennifer Robison, PIBHS Class of ‘93, was still a student, and now she’s seen at Heineman’s sampling the fruit of the vine and noted in the Put-in-Bay Diary June 2018

Sun., June 3rd – The oldest graduate, Sally Brown Dinder, 97, at the Put-in-Bay High School Alumni Banquet graduated in 1940. Chuck Lunt, Christie Ontko, Ty Burgess, Dustin Heineman, and Emily Morrow, Deeks, put together a fantastic event. Rich Hahn, Noreen Hahn, Diane Nemec, and John and Jean Chervenak sponsor the antique car parade in the afternoon. There’s a stop at Frosty Bar after the parade. The first game of the 2018 Lake Erie Islands Softball League season is played.

Mon., June 4th – There’s a 60th birthday party for Amy Huston at her home at the corner of Langram and Concord. Mad Dog Adams joins Dennis King on Island Time Radio Put-in-Bay and discusses “celebrating Put-in-Bay through music.”

Tues., June 5th – Some of the hot spots for walleye are north of the Niagara Reef complex in deeper water, north of A Can, and a large area bordered by Middle Island, Middle Bass Island, and the Canadian border near North Bass Island. There’s a soup dinner at St. Paul’s for the summer workers on the island. Island weddings are plentiful as couples celebrate love island style.

Wed., June 6th – The first Wednesday Artisan Fair takes place in the Village Park across from the Boathouse. Kelly Faris acts as a clerk for the Village Council meeting. Bud and Ruth Stonerook get unexpected visitors from South Bass Island. It was the first Heineman Winery group bringing over supplies to begin work in the vineyards by the cemetery.

Thurs., June 7th – A small group of islanders in two boat heads to North Bass to help Dustin Heineman and his crew start working in the vineyards.

Fri., June 8th – The Village Council’s Property/Projects/Town Hall Committee meets to discuss housing agreements for Village employees and use of the newly-purchased Frederick’s property on Erie Street for parking. There’s a 50th Birthday party for Eric Engel at the Crew’s Nest Pavilion. Sailboaters from the Toledo area are heading to Put-in-Bay as they take part in the 95th Invitational Mills Trophy Race The Mills Trophy Race,

Sat., June 9th – Services for former Maple Cottage B&B owner Dave Moore were held at the cemetery, followed by a luncheon in the Undercroft of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The South Bass Island Lighthouse is open for tours. There are some extraordinary things to see at the Put-in-Play Con at the Niagara Event Center. Sailors crowd the tent set up for the Mills Race participants at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. Thank the Good Lord they have it. It’s a pretty rainy day. Those who love music were also caught in the rain while watching the bands at this year’s Music Festival at the Monument. The bands played all through the rain. First, the Mayflies are seen in the morning.

Sun., June 10th – Those full docks in the morning were empty by mid-afternoon as northeasterly winds began to blow, and the weather became the Put-in-Bay News of the day! There’s rain in the afternoon. Trips from Put-in-Bay via the Jet Express with a stop at Cedar Point begin today. Visitors to Cedar Point can lengthen their stay and use the Jet Express to connect with the rest of the Lake Erie Islands and Port Clinton. Round trip tickets from Cedar Point to Put-in-Bay are $40 round trip, $15 for youth, and $6 for children

Mon., June 11th – Due to high wind and wave conditions, no Sonny S ferry from Put-in-Bay to Middle Bass Island today. There’s a DeRivera Park Trust meeting in the afternoon. A little more fun and exciting was the 10th annual Drag Queen Show at the Round House that evening. Celebrity “Drag Queen” Qmitch Jones from Key West is on hand for the big show. Miss Roundhouse was the winner.

Tues., June 12th – The Put-in-Bay Town Hall is busy in the morning. There’s Diversity Training in the Assembly Room, a Village Council Parks/Docks committee meeting in the Council Room to discuss dockage rates, and a discussion of the Township Park Committee in the Village Administrator’s office. Wow. Over on Middle Bass at their Town Hall, there’s a meeting to voice concerns about EMS service for Middle Bass

Wed., June 13th – The Put-in-Bay Village Council’s Finance Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. before the regular Council meeting at 9 a.m. Monday and Wednesday PiYo fitness classes start at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club in the morning. The second Artisans Fair in the Park occurs across the street from the Boathouse. Ken Wasco from GFS speaks to island business employees about customer service at the Town Hall after lunch. Cameo Pizza is celebrating its grand opening at our new location inside Mr. Ed’s Bar! They have an all-you-can-eat buffet with pizza, wings, and appetizers.

Thurs., June 14th – Terri Moore from Ballast Island comes over to Put-in-Bay to have lunch at the Goat with island friends Marty Faris and Kendra Koehler.

Fri., June 15th – Strength Training and Conditioning starts in the morning at PIBYC! The Lyman Boat Owners Association begins its weekend-long 3rd Annual Maritime Celebration at Miller Marina. The 2018 opening party for members is at the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society museum. Island photographer Kelly Faris is present to answer questions about his photos which are being displayed there for the summer. The Put-in-Bay Community Swim/Sail Program’s Spaghetti Fundraiser Dinner is at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. If you plan on your kids attending summer camp, it’s time for Put-in-Bay Camping Registration.

Sat., June 16th – It’s a busy Saturday with many people on the island. There’s the Pooch Parade, the Put-in-Bay Property Owners meeting at the Senior Center, and the hot topic is Put-in-Bay Property Taxes, Founders Day in De- Rivera Park, and a celebration of life for Mary Wells at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. Police are ticketing numerous golf carts parked on the north side of Bayview Ave. by the public docks. The lack of “No Parking” signs may be part of the problem. Among the “dunkers” in the Swim/Sail’s dunking tank at Founders Day were Put-in-Bay School Superintendent Steve Poe and EMS Director Patrick Rodgers.

Sun., June 17th – It’s Father’s Day on the Island, and it’s the HOT & HUMID!!! Donna Glisman from Checker Cab spots a very young deer crossing the road by the Bay-Shore Resort and then head down Toledo Ave., where she saw it sitting on someone’s porch. The Antique Car Parade sponsors are Judy Angel Kania, Kay Drake, and Put-in-Bay Taxi. The antique car parade participants head to the Boathouse after the parade. Speaking of Put-in-Bay Taxi (the yellow ones), they offered free rides to all fathers who mentioned they saw the free ride offer on Facebook.

Mon., June 18th – There are very few boats in the harbor for a very summer-like day in June. Boaters must have seen the rain and lightning storms forecast for the evening hours in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

Tues., June 19th – This is the first morning we have seen any significant numbers of Canadian Soldiers. While sailing in the harbor with the other young sailors, Joe Blumensaadt capsizes three times. Steve Heineman is the instructor for the TIPS Training at the Niagara Event Center. Training in Intervention Procedures for Servers of Alcohol is intended for servers of alcohol, owners, and managers. The three-hour course includes The effects of alcohol on the body, the server’s response to the intoxicated customer and the server’s legal and civil responsibilities. The information is reinforced with role-playing and a written test.

Wed., June 20th – Rain and a cool east-northeast wind in the morning keep the island from getting too hot. Teri Winchester and Kendra Koehler are putting up posters to remind everyone about the Put-in-Bay Fireworks display over the harbor on July 4th. The Put-in-Bay Community Swim/Sail Program sailors are racing in the Jr. Travelers Series Regatta at Edgewater Yacht Club with the tall building of downtown Cleveland in the background. There’s an Ice Cream Social at the Dairy Isle. Half of all sales benefit the Put-in-Bay CommunitySwim/Sail Program.

Thurs., June 21st – The famous giant walleye used for the Walleye Drop in Port Clinton is brought to the island on the ferry for Pirate Fest.
On Gibraltar Island at the Stone Lab Guest Lecture, the Toledo Zoo’s The Wilds Executive Director Dr. Stephen Spear presents “From Snot Otters to Burying Beetles: Native Wildlife Conservation at The Wilds.”

The evening starts off with OSU doctoral student Chelsey Neiman discussing “Visual Ecology of Lake Erie Fishes,” her research into how Lake Erie sportfish and their prey see and are seen when algal blooms and sediment reduce the clarity of the lake’s water. The Put-in-Bay Singing Contest begins at the Reel Bar. A portion of the proceeds goes to a charity benefiting St. Paul’s. In honor of their donation, Mother Mary sings a song.

Fri., June 22nd – The tenth annual Pyrate Fest starts today. This event has become the most significant family event on the island. Unfortunately, divers from the Ottawa County Sheriff Dive Team in the marina near the Jet Express Dock found a 37-year-old man last seen the night before while tying lines on his boat at the Keys. The Coast Guard reported relatives of the missing man were on the scene when the body was found and confirmed his identity.

The winds were making it pretty chopping for the boats docked in the harbor during the night. Speculation is the man disappeared while checking his boat tied to the dock. We hope it was not another case of someone being electrocuted at Put-in-Bay.

Sat., June 23rd – Rain puts a tiny bit of a damper on the Pryrate Fest, but the booms from the cannons set up in DeRivera Park can be heard
throughout the day. There is a rifle volley and salute rendered by Legion Post 542 in honor of Bob Ramsbottom at St. Paul’s. The Middle Bass Island Volunteer Fire Department Sunset Cruise Fundraiser takes place in the evening.

It includes a pig roast dinner, side dishes, desserts, beer, and wine! There’s music and dancing, too. We wish all ferry rides were like that! Proceeds benefit the Middle Bass Island Volunteer Fire Dept. The water level in the lake is high, so it only made sense the fun level at this sunset cruise is high, too. There’s a crime wave on the West Shore. Kay Drake has her car turned up missing; the same happens to a neighbor’s golf cart.

Sun., June 24th – There’s a gathering at the home of Dan and Sue Savage on East Point in memory of the late Sara Zimmerman, who
worked at the island museum. Scott Jackson treats his staff at the Goat to an after-work sushi employee party.

Mon., June 25th- It’s the first of four days for children’s arts and crafts. Arts on Erie is taught by Celeste Mycoskie on the back porch
of Perry’s Victory Visitor Center. It’s a free program and is supported by National Park Service and the Put-in-Bay Recreation Committee! The annual cardboard boat races take place late in the afternoon. The Keys team is the winner.

Tues., June 26th – The theme for the Ladies Auxiliary gathering at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is “Wine & Whispers.” A promotion
said, “Come to share your memories or listen intently as others share their stories.” We think a better name might be “Wine & Gossip,” but you didn’t read that here. Mariah Loud is kidnapped by friends from her waitress job at the Goat. They take her out on the town for a birthday celebration. The first stop is Heineman Winery.

Wed., June 27th – Magician Gordon Russ performs at the Erie Islands Library in the afternoon. It’s a fun, interactive magic show
perfect for all ages. We are enjoying reading the new book about Put-in-Bay!

Thurs., June 28th – You can get a cheeseburger right off the grill a the yacht club for $4.50. A membership at the yacht club makes sense financially, especially if you go out to dinner a lot.

Fri., June 29th – Motivational speaker, co-owner of Muscle Bay Fitness, and children’s book author Brandon Copeland is at the Put-in-
Bay Library for a meet and greet. Chef Anne Spettel will be preparing Beef Stroganoff with egg noodles, peas with pearl onions, salad, rolls & butter at the Put-on-Bay Yacht Club’s Friday Night Dinner

Sat., June 30th – It’s Martini Night on the patio at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club.
