The Doller House
This Italianate beauty sits on Lake Erie with spectacular harbor and Gibraltar Island views. Along with wine tours, visitors can tour the Doller House and Island Life Museum.
Initially held by the island’s first entrepreneur, Valentine Doller, this home is an intriguing look into Put-in-Bay’s history. The gray and yellow brick and wood house was constructed in two sections — one half is wooden, and the other, added in 1883, likely was red brick until it was painted. The tower at the front corner categorizes the building as Italianate architecture.
Valentine Doller, a German settler, arrived at Put-in-Bay in 1859. Doller went about building a general store and ran the island post office. The Fish Bowl and Mossback’s Restaurant are now found on the site of the general store.
Doller is best known for his ice company. He saw the opportunity during those lengthy winter months on the island. Doller would gather ice blocks directly from the lake and hold them in an ice house to sell in the summer. He also owned the only dock open to the public on the island and used it for private parties.
The home provides a full catering menu and can accommodate parties of anywhere from 15 to 60 guests. The waterfront yard offers beautiful lake views, while the backyard is ideal for dancing. A pavilion is suitable for large events. Call the Put-in-Bay Winery to discuss your party plans.
