Diary February 2013 Fri., Feb. 1st – The lake is ice-covered again. This is the third time this winter. Will this time be the charm? Congrats to the Panther Basketball players for sweeping the Science Olympiad! 1st place goes to Casey and Ian Ladd, 2nd to Cody Porche, 3rd to Gunnar Auger and 4th to Elliott Kowalski! Panther team members excel on the hardwood and in the classroom! Great job!
Diary February 2013- Sat., Feb. 2nd – Due to poor weather conditions today’s Put-in-Bay Panther basketball was canceled! Seniors Wyatt Auger and Shawn Seaberg miss their last home game.
Diary February 2013-Sun., Feb. 3rd – The Lake Erie Islands Browns Backers welcome new member Andy Mohn at their Annual Meeting the Super Bowl Sunday at Tipper’s. For the first time, ever Level 2 opens for the Super Bowl! Mysti Karr finds a duck under a dock on the ice trying to fly. Its feet were frozen in the ice so she walked down with a spud to break it free. The duck was frozen in, but had a broken wing and was so scared Mysti couldn’t catch it to help it.
Diary February 2013 Mon. Feb. 4th – There’s nice fresh snow on the island!
Diary February 2013 Tues., Feb. 5th – The Put-in-Bay Panther basketball team plays its last game of the season and finish with a 13-2 record. Seniors Shawn Seaberg and Wyatt Auger finish their four-year high school basketball careers with a 39 win/16 loss record. Joey Wolf and Bill Burger enjoy the Cleveland Home and Garden Show. It’s next best thing to Florida!
Diary-Wed., Feb. 6th – The Put-in-Bay volunteer firemen are busy training at the station in the evening.
Thurs., Feb. 7th – It’s Put-in-Bay Days in Key West, FL. Round House entertainer Mike “Mad Dog” Adams is playing at Sloppy Joe’s along with other island entertainers. The epic film “One Night with the King” is shown at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Fri., Feb. 8th – Tipper’s has a Chinese Buffet to celebrate Chinese New Year. It’s the year of the Lake Erie water snake.
Sat. Feb. 9th – Three members from Put-in-Bay Vol. Fire Dept., Mark Wilhelm, Douglas Wilhelm and Ty Winchester are doing an ice rescue exercise with the Coast Guard and other area fire and EMS Departments on the mainland.
Sun., Feb 10th – Island entertainer J.D. Owen plays at Mr. Ed’s, Port Clinton, in a benefit for Jimmy Lucas. Jimmy has been the manager at Mr. Ed’s for a number of years and prior to that was the manager of Tipper’s. Jimmy has been stricken with cancer.
Mon., Feb. 11th – Winds of 41 miles per hour from the west-southwest hasten the demise of the ice in the lake.
Tues., Feb. 12th – There’s a team of dedicated islanders, Laurie Miller, Sonya Dress, Abby Breier, Kate Werttenbach, Sonya Niese, David Dress, Doug Kester, Gloria Kindt, Sue Seaberg and Mary Ann Wilhelm preparing Fastnachts for the evening’s annual Bingo & Fastnacht Party at the Town Hall.
Wed, Feb. 13th – Put-in-Bay Vol. Fireman Doug Wilhelm is in Toledo for training.
Thurs., Feb. 14th – It’s Valentine’s Day on the island. Lovers can have a split of champagne with dinner at Tipper’s.
Fri. Feb. 15th – Theresa Finney catches her first walleye of the season. The east end of South Bass around Buckeye is open water with a little shore ice on the edges.
Sat., Feb. 16th – There’s some ice fishing going on, but there are only a few shanties on the ice.
Sun., Feb, 17th – Wow! It’s Doug Kester’s birthday today. They’re ice boating on the Bay. From the air, Starve island looks like an ice shove rather than an island. There’s a mass migration from the mainland of islanders trying to get back to the island after the school’s mid-winter break.
Mon., Feb. 18th – There are a few hardy ice fishermen fishing in shanties on the West Shore. Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce president Ty Winchester addresses an audience of about 60 people at the Chamber’s meeting at Tipper’s. Seems they have the “Twelve Days of Christmas in July” on their minds.
Tues., Feb. 19th – Winds break up the ice in the lake. The Bible Buddies meet at St. Paul’s in the Undercroft.
Wed., Feb. 20th- Bud Stonerook on North Bass reports the open lake of the previous day is now ice covered as far as
the eye can see. Jake Market is sworn in as a Village Council member to fill the seat vacated by Judy Berry.
Thurs., Feb. 21st – The Jeff Verhoff Dinner takes place at the Town Hall. There was a good turnout and wonderfully delicious desserts. There are ice boaters on the Bay.
Fri., Feb. 22nd – A wintry mix of snow and freezing rain hits the island in the A.M. It’s so bad, the wings on the seagulls in the Bay are icing up, and many of the birds are falling out of the sky.
Sat., Feb. 23rd – One of Christie Ontko’s chickens flies the coop and is killed in the street in front of her house. The Chocolate Fest takes place at the Put-in-Bay Library in the morning. Later in the afternoon LifeFlight takes four islanders off the island who are in chocolate comas. Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but everything was so good, it could have happened. In the evening, Tipper’s is jammed with customers enjoying the Chinese buffet and the Jer-Bear and Kurt Memorial Fishing Tournament.
Sun., Feb. 24th – The second pancake breakfast of the winter takes place at the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Dept. Only one complaint! There were no chocolate chip pancakes to ease the withdrawal from all the chocolate consumed at the Chocolate Fest at the library the day before.
Mon., Feb. 25th – Scott Pugh from Put-in-Bay Electric is busy fixing Mike Steidl’s Direct TV connection. Mike is now happy again.
Diary February 2013 Tues., Feb. 26th – The Put-in-Bay High School Panther Basketball awards ceremony scheduled for today is rescheduled for March. On of those cold winter rains hits the islands in the afternoon.
Diary February 2013 Wed., Feb. 27th – Above freezing temperatures are making the ice very wet on top.
Diary February 2013 Thurs., Feb. 28th – The March issue of the Put-in-Bay Gazette is printed in Sandusky, Ohio.
