Put-in-Bay News April 2011 Everything You Missed Here!

Put-in-Bay News reports two former island residents and business people will return to Put-in-Bay this summer. Tommy Dailey will be the new manager of the Put-in-Bay Brewing Co. and Mojito Bay, and former Erie Isle Tavern owner Robbie Morrow will be coming to the Put-in-Bay Winery at the Doller House. There was a Mardi Gras-themed Euchre evening on the first day of Lent at Tippers.

Gary and Becky Kowalski spent a little time in Myrtle Beach in March. Also traveling in March was Dustin Heineman, who traveled to the Bahamas for a vacation to prepare for the upcoming season. Congratulations to Sandy Hartzel for winning the “first day the boat will run” contest at Tippers. Jason and Chris at Island Hardware report Spike & Wylsons, the hot dog stand they had by their store, will be moving out to South Bass Island State Park and replace Bob Gatewood’s, Snack Shack. Did you notice the addition to the Island Hardware Store? It’s the store’s new lumber department.

There were 19,600 gallons of propane on the first ferry trip from the mainland of the 2011 season. Thanks to the Put-in-Bay PTA for serving food in the school’s Multi-purpose Room for the OGT (Ohio Graduation Tests) tests students took for three days in mid-March. Put-in-Bay News Reports, for the first time in ten years, Joe Kostura was forced to cancel service running air-boat trips the last several weeks due to highly bumpy ice in the channel.

Many of his regular customers were flying home because of the conditions, and the Airboat was taking a huge beating! “We had to decide based on conditions that have never lasted long enough to be an issue. Hard Water Charters “holding” status was not meant to leave any of its loyal customers in a lurch…it was a decision based on safety for all and business. Thanks to everyone who used the Airboat services this season…we truly appreciate you all.” – Joe & Suzanne Kostura Hard Water Charters and its customers would like to thank Miller Ferry Boat Line for using their docks and parking lots this past season. It is a huge convenience!

In other Put-in-Bay News, Put-in-Bay school teacher Karen Wilhelm will take a post-graduate Underwater GeoCaching course at Stone Lab this summer. For those who don’t know, Geo Caching is when people hide items in spots worldwide, post the location on the Internet, and then others go out with GPS units and try to find them. Karen, an ardent GeoCacher, says there are plenty of Geo Cached-items in the island area, but none so far underwater.

Barb Chrysler experienced one of those “you’ll always remember” moments while on vacation in Florida recently. She was walking
with Babs Hunter from Fox’s Den by two little girls playing Frisbee. The toy came close to Barb and nearly beaned her. As they walked away, Babs heard the one girl say to the other, “You’ve got to be careful of old ladies.” Ouch! Watch for Put-in-Bay Photos coming soon!

Put-in-Bay News from the DeRiviera Park Trustees and Village Counsel stated they would replace the old worn-out cannons on the park waterfront later this spring with more modern ones recently purchased from a recycler in Alabama. The old guns will all be removed. One will be donated to the island museum for display, some will be sold at the various auction fundraisers held by the island’s non-profit organizations, and some will be given to the Resale Shop for resale.

Gippy Up Dave tells us Emmy-nominated actor Larry Thomas, best known for his portrayal as “The Soup Nazi” on the television show Seinfeld, will be back in the Bay this year (after missing last year) the weekend of July 15th. On Saturday the 16th, plans call for him to be at Goat Soup and Whiskey again.

There will be no Put-in-Bay PTA meeting in April. One of the things you’ll find around the island this spring is the new parachute top on the Round House Bar ceiling. One of the island’s most popular Put-in-Bay Entertainers entertainers, Ray Fogg, has moved his venue to the Boathouse Bar & Grill this summer. He will also be playing from time to time at the Round House Bar. Boathouse manager Andy Christensen says he’s looking forward to having Ray at his establishment along with Pat Dailey.

We got a call from rocker and island resident Bob Gatewood, who has been in Nashville a lot lately, working on his new CD. He will be re-recorded with legendary drummer Joe Vitale and former Calabash guitarist Tom Bukovac, 2009 ACM Best Guitarist. Gatewood is also collaborating with Sarah Buxton, a Nashville songwriter who recently penned a couple of songs in the top ten for Keith Urban.“It looks like it will be ready for the upcoming season,” Gatewood said, “…and I’m going to try to play some of the new songs at our Round House show on April 22 and 23.”Did you know Paul Genzman teaches an Environmental Science Class at Put-in-Bay School?

Put-in-Bay News from Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton recently announced Perry’s Monument Ranger Jeff Helmer’s presentation of the Battle of Lake Erie scheduled for Tuesday, March 29, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 20, at 6:30 pm. On the Internet, the talk was described as “Battle of Lake Erie, 1813 – Oliver Hazard Perry thumps on the British.” The Village of Put-in-Bay Tree Commission will be planting trees along Langram Rd. Near the gas station at their Arbor Day celebration are a Dogwood, a Red Bud, and a Witch Hazel. The tree planting will occur on April 29th; everyone is invited to join.

What brought you to the islands? We’re posing the question to islanders and cottagers who would like to share their stories with us for an article in an upcoming issue of the Gazette. Please send your thoughts to us at Put-in-Bay News-Gazette at P.O. Box 384, Put-in-Bay, Ohio. We know some interesting stories are out there, so don’t be shy and drop us a line. Congrats to Sara Farman, who was voted best overall at March’s island talent show.
